Welcome to The Tyro Lawyer mentoring programme

About us

The Tyro Lawyer exists to provide guidance, through online mentoring, for young people in Birmingham and the black country on their journey into a career in the legal profession. The word tyro means novice or learner, and The Tyro Lawyer represents the aspiring lawyer at the beginning of their journey.

My name is Abi Adeboyejo, and I am the founder of The Tyro Lawyer Mentoring Programme. I have taught law to young people for over twenty years, and I currently teach at one of the leading sixth form colleges in the Midlands. Many of my students demonstrate a strong interest in law from their first year of sixth form, and it has often been a significant challenge to find mentoring programmes specifically designed for their age group. Such programmes are vital in nurturing their interest and helping them pursue a career in the legal profession. The support of legal professionals who are willing to encourage and inspire the younger generation is invaluable, and students benefit greatly from such guidance.

I first became aware of Stemettes, an organisation that provides mentoring for girls interested in careers in STEM. I was inspired by their work and, with the support of colleagues, I decided to launch an online mentoring programme in 2021 for law students aged sixteen to nineteen.

We believe that mentorship offers professionals a unique opportunity to open doors to future academic and career possibilities, while also cultivating a student’s sense of purpose. Mentoring enables students to develop their interests, strengths, and aspirations, while also encouraging them to engage in activities that build skills, confidence, and self-awareness.

The programme has been very successful, and in 2022, in partnership with Birmingham Black Lawyers, it expanded to include undergraduate students across the West Midlands. This new programme is known as Tyro Lawyer Plus.

Additionally, we were awarded the Birmingham Black Lawyers Black Excellence Award Diversity Champion of the Year 2023. In 2026, we were named a finalist at the Legal Awards for Excellence by the Birmingham Law Society, a recognition that reflects the impact of the programme and the dedication of everyone who has supported it. These milestones have strengthened our resolve to keep creating opportunities for law students in Birmingham and the Black Country that might not otherwise exist.

We warmly welcome you to join us as a mentor, mentee, or partner. We invite you to explore our website and contact us at info@tyrolawyer.co.uk.
