About us

The Tyro Lawyer exists to provide guidance through online mentoring for young people in Birmingham and the Black Country as they pursue their careers in the legal profession. The term 'tyro' means novice or learner, symbolizing the budding lawyers at the start of their journey.

My name is Abi Adeboyejo, and I am the founder of The Tyro Lawyer Mentoring Programme. With over twenty years of experience teaching law to young people, I currently work at one of the Midlands’ leading sixth form colleges. Many of my students show a strong interest in law from their first year, yet it often proves challenging to find a tailored mentoring programme for young lawyers. Such programmes are vital for nurturing their interest and offering essential youth legal career support. The encouragement from legal professionals can significantly inspire the younger generation, allowing them to greatly benefit from this guidance.

I first discovered Stemettes, an organization dedicated to mentoring girls interested in STEM careers. Inspired by their impactful work, I, along with my colleagues, launched an online mentoring programme in 2021 specifically for law students aged sixteen to nineteen. 

We believe that this mentoring programme for young lawyers presents a unique chance for professionals to unlock future academic and career possibilities while fostering a student’s sense of purpose. Mentoring encourages students to explore their interests, strengths, and aspirations while also engaging in activities that build essential skills, confidence, and self-awareness.

The programme has seen great success. In 2022, it expanded in partnership with Birmingham Black Lawyers to include undergraduate students across the West Midlands, now known as Tyro Lawyer Plus.

We were honored to receive the Birmingham Black Lawyers Black Excellence Award for Diversity Champion of the Year 2023, and in 2026, we were named a finalist at the Legal Awards for Excellence by the Birmingham Law Society. These accolades reflect the programme's impact and the dedication of everyone involved in supporting it, strengthening our commitment to creating more opportunities for law students in Birmingham and the Black Country that might not otherwise exist.
