Mentees learn life and professional skills
Mentors encourage and inspire young people
Mentees develop their strengths and improve their weaknesses
Hello,
Welcome to The Tyro Lawyer Mentoring Programme.
The Tyro Lawyer aims to provide guidance, through online mentoring, for young people on their journey into a career in law and the legal profession. The Tyro Lawyer means the novice or learner lawyer.
My name is Abi Adeboyejo, and I am the founder of the Tyro Lawyer Mentoring Programme. I have taught law to young people for over 17 years, and I currently teach at one of the best 6th form colleges in the Midlands. Many of my students show a keen interest in law from their first year of 6th form and it has always been a herculean task to find mentoring programmes tailored to their age group to develop their interest in pursuing a career in the legal profession. The network of legal professionals willing to encourage and inspire the younger generation is invaluable and students benefit immensely from such support.
I became aware of Stemettes, an organisation that provides mentoring for girls interested in a STEM career. I was inspired by their work and with the support of a couple of colleagues, I decided to start an online mentoring programme for law students aged between 16- 18 years old in 2021.
The programme has been successful, and in January 2023, in partnership with Birmingham Black Lawyers, the programme expanded to include undergraduate students in the West Midlands. This new programme is known as Tyro Lawyer Plus.
We believe that through mentorship, professionals have a unique opportunity to help open doors to future academic and career possibilities and cultivate a student’s sense of purpose. Mentoring allows students to develop their interests, strengths, and goals and allows mentors to encourage students to engage in activities that help build skills toward their passion for law or to try new activities and expand the student’s self-awareness and sense of self-efficacy.
In July 2023 we were awarded the Birmingham Black Lawyers Black Excellence Award as Diversity Champion of the year 2023.We are determined to continue to provide opportunities that would not neceassirily be available for law students in Birmingham and the black country.
We would like to welcome you on board as a mentor, mentee or partner. We hope you will look around our website and get in touch at info@tyrolawyer.co.uk.
Thank you.
Best wishes,
Abi Adeboyejo
